X-ray examinations are becoming increasingly common as a diagnostic and screening tool as more persons gain access to medical care. Frequently, patients may need to have repeat examinations after their initial radiographs are rejected due to poor diagnostic image quality. This results in a potential delay in treatment, unnecessary radiation exposure to both patient and staff, and increased institutional operational costs. The study therefore seeks to determine the overall film reject rate, common reasons for film rejection and factors influencing same at Linden Hospital Complex, Public Hospital Suddie, West Demerara Regional Hospital, and New Amsterdam Hospital, over a two-month period. The research will employ a cross-sectional study design. Purposive sampling will be used to select the health institutions and study participants. All consenting medical imaging personnel that directly operate the X-ray equipment will be recruited for the study. A questionnaire will be used to collect sociodemographic data, while three standardised checklists will be used to record data on the type of examination, film criteria, reason for rejection, and film size. Univariate and bivariate analysis will be done. Associations will be assessed using the Chi-square test at significance level of 0.05. The study will help identify the extent and reasons for film rejection and repeated examinations, indicate weak areas of radiographic practice, and thus, provide relevant information that will aid in achieving a reduction in patient radiation exposure, while improving image quality efficiency.
