The built environment affects the behavioural patterns and health of its residents, causing changes to their mood, feelings, emotional state, and in some cases may even cause minor illnesses. In Guyana this issue isn’t given much thought, mainly due to the fact that most homeowners are contented with just owning a home and there is little to no insight as to how a community of squatters would be affected by their environment. The research focuses on the squatting community of ‘B’ Field Sophia and the residents (low to high income homeowners) of Cummings Lodge. The two communities were chosen to highlight how their respective environments impact their behaviours and to compare any similarities found during the research. Research data will be gathered by means of questionnaires from 40 individuals from each community. The research findings may highlight how these two Guyanese communities are affected by their respective built environments, and how architects and designers can create homes or built environments that may reduce negative impacts such as stress, fatigue, discomfort, and building related illnesses; as well as improve the positive aspects.
